McGwire's Admission
67
The media is having quite a field day with Mark McGwire's admission that he was using steroids intermittently in his career.
It's really funny how outraged some of these columinsts act.
One made a big deal outta McGwire taking the fifth, and not admitting his use, in front of that 2005 kangaroo court of a Senate Subcommittee.
Well, lemme tell ya something buddy.
If you were faced with incriminating yourself on a draconian federal charge or keeping your mouth shut, I bet you'd do exactly what McGuire did.
( look at Roger Clemens' recent indictment for an example... )
Congressman Tom Davis, who originally called for those damned 2005 hearings in the first place, put it rationally enough, when he explained "..... had he (McGwire) spoken about steroid use through his final season with the Cardinals (2001), McGwire could have potentially been charged with a violation of the Anabolic Steroid Control Act that has a statute of
limitations of five years."
That same Congressman now claims that the hearing weren't called for 'any political gain'.
They were concerned for the 'children', he says.
This, despite the fact, that a 2003 study found that less than 1% of high school athletes ever even touched the stuff.
....And these old sports writers with their newly acquired enthusiasm for this crusade against juice......
Where were they when it was obvious TO EVERYBODY ( as baseballs went flying over the fence in record numbers....) the guys were using.
Another remarked that McGuire's coach should be prosecuted "... because he had to be aware of it".
There's two things wrong with this stupid statement.
One, EVERYBODY knew - the league decided it was in their interest to look the other way.
This was right after the strike- MLB has lost millions of fans.
What it needed was some excitement.
And baseballs flying over the fence, --- and 100 mile per hour fastballs -- were exciting.
There is no other explanation - they knew there was a problem, and could have tested the players easily enough.
The sports writers saw it first hand, and said NOTHING, NADA, BUPPKIS.
Now, all of a sudden, they're all avenging angels on behalf of the 'truth'.
Ha.
Phoooey.
Two, the fact that steroids are penalized in the same way that dangerous narcotics like heroin are--
Despite the facts:
--- that there is NO social problems like violent crime and burglaries attached to their use-
--- that moderate use of which will do nothing but IMPROVE the average user's health....
--- and prosecuting somebody for not ratting out a teammate isn't reasonable even today......
Well, it's not like we're not all used to hypocrisy in gov't and in the media by now......
As far McGwire's admission, it can be easily explained-
Now that he's going back into baseball as a coach,
....... and now that the statute of limitations time is past,
I guess McGwire figures it'll help his chances of getting in the Hall of Fame if he 'fesses up'.
He does belongs there...
----- steroids didnt make him a great baseball player- talent and practice did.
He used juice for the same reason so many other guys did at that time
- to keep his edge-
..... when other guys are using and you're not, you're at a disadvantage.
That's why TESTING should have been used -- across the board -- if Baseball had been serious about it. ( which they were NOT )
But, I'm not crazy about the admission anyway.
By admittting it, he is now subject to being subpoenaed to rat out other guys who have not been so .......... uumm..... forthcoming.
And it certainly contributes to the public "Reefer Madness" type panic and ignorance on the subject.
Haha..... here's another bizarre twist on this story....
Victor Conte, the founder of the supplement company BALCO that supplied performance-enhancing drugs to elite athletes, said in a statement he hopes others will follow McGwire's lead.
Oh brother.
Yeah, OK , Victor.....
............ when you 'fess up' about all the people and juice YOU were involved with over the years.
Go on, Victor..... start talking.
Let's see if you can afford those Bentleys when you're through.
Or all they all 'paid-for', already?
I'm ashamed to be a Tower of Power fan right now.
DISGUSTING.
